About the Course

  • The Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies is a four-year undergraduate programme that combines general education with basic study of community development.
  • It is designed to develop a consistent Christian vision and approach to community development and poverty reduction.
  • This will be attained by helping the students to acquire relevant knowledge, skills and competencies geared towards empowering communities to manage their own initiatives for social transformation.
  • Students in this programme will major in one of two areas:

 Sustainable Community Development
• Urban Development.

A track in international development will be developed at a future date.

Students who successfully complete the programme of study for the Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies should have acquired knowledge, skills and abilities to
i. Demonstrate mastery of sound concepts and principles in research and development theories with reference to factors in sustainable development.
ii. Apply a coherent vision for Christian approach and lifestyle to community development and poverty reduction in view of career readiness
iii. Design, implement and manage development services that reflect sensitivity to the holistic nature of human needs, whether spiritual, physical, social, or psychological needs in diverse contexts (Development Practice).
iv. Exhibit ethical and strategic leadership and social responsibility in the workplace and in the use of the environment in development (Leadership and Ethics)
v. Effectively organise and tap into available resources, both human and material, to solve organisational problems and address contemporary issues of concern with efficiency (Resource mobilization/Problem Solving).

Admission Requirements

A candidate must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements before admission into the programme:

Either

1. Be a holder of KCSE (or equivalent examination) certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+

or
2. Be a holder of KCSE (or equivalent examination) certificate with a minimum aggregate of C- plus a bridging certificate and a university level diploma

3. Be a holder of KACE certificate with a minimum of two principal passes

or
4. Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above.

Curriculum

Courses in the curriculum are classified as University Core, General Education Core, Development Studies (Foundational) courses, Specialization and Elective courses

Mode of Delivery

  • This four year programme will be delivered in various modes.
  • There will be Fulltime Day Classes (at the Main Campus), Evening Classes, Distance/School-Based Classes as well as e-Learning.
  • These will be offered on Trimester-basis in different campuses at the county levels in an effort to make the programme more easily accessible and affordable to the students. Similarly, admission of students will also be on Trimester-basis.
  • In any case, the standard requirements of teacher-student contact hours will be maintained.
